ReviewsEdit

In 2014, John Takis reviewed the soundtrack from The Underdwellers as part of the 3rd Volume of Original Soundtracks from Batman: The Animated Series.

The Underdwellers was scored jointly by Lars Clutterham and Stuart Balcomb. The latter composed a downtrodden march for the children, and a suspenseful three-note motif-and-variations that is developed over several minutes in conjuction with Walker's Batman theme as the Dark Knight descends into the Sewer King's domain. Clutterham, meanwhile, wrote most of the score's action music, including the opening game of chicken and the swashbuckling underscore for Batman's battle with the Sewer King and his pets.

Stuart Balcomb, composer of the soundtrack, stated the following:

There's a point where low brass are playing against busy violins while clarinet plays the Batman theme. On the last note, French horns join in, then trumpets hit the 'rat-a-tat' figure with them at the end. So the line morphs from clarinet to horns to trumpets, then back again. That's the sort of thing I like to do with changing colors.

Lars Clutterham, the second composer said:

I was flattered to have the opportunity to write for the show. It struck me and at the time that Shirley's effort to bring new blood into the business was an extraordinarily generous gesture. And I feel the same way about that endeavour today.
