Reviews[]

Writer Paul Dini wrote in 2008, the following statement in regards of the score for the episode:

"Shirley Walker's use of strident violins and fluttered woodwinds under the opening titles perfectly conjures up images of bats, the dominant motif of the episode. When Batman hitches a ride on the escaping Man-Bat, every sweep of the monster's wings and swirl of Batman's cape is wonderfully accented by the orchestra, conveying a sense of dizzying heights and sudden drops. Everyone who saw this first episode set to music agreed that Shirley had deftly caught the essence of Batman and his world and had made it indelibly her own."

Soundtrack editor, Daniel Schweiger stated the following:

"Shirley Walker proved that she had the right, dark stuff to score Batman on her own, beginning with fluttering strings and the growling brass signature that embodied the Man-Bat. Her own signature "Batman Theme" would be introduced in "Batman Drives to Gotham". But perhaps the pilot's biggest standout is the "monster movie" quality of Walker's work, from the mysterioso music of Batman's investigation to Walker's sonar-like use of xylophone runs and percussion as Batman is taken for a wild ride by Man-Bat, the music ducking and dodging with a mixture of exhilaration and peril. This was exactly the sound that Timm and Radomski were hoping for the series. "When we heard those trombones in the opening, it sent chills up and down our spines", Timm recalls."
