This is background information and production notes of the episode Be a Clown, from season one of Batman: The Animated Series.

Production NotesEdit

  • Bruce Timm claims that he had the idea for the episode when he had the image in his mind of Batman trying to save a child, but the child's too scared because of Batman's intimidating look.
  • Frank Paur, the director, was having difficulties with the storyboarding crew, and when a freelancer quit, Bruce Timm storyboarded the entire second act.
  • The roller coaster sequence was adapted into the third stage of the Joker level in the Super Nintendo game The Adventures of Batman & Robin.
  • The episode also called for an unusual amount of source music. One of the source cues that wound up not being used was subsequently used in the episode Baby-Doll and on the "Superman: The Animated Series" episode "World's Finest, Part II".

Voice ActingEdit

  • Mark Hamill also voiced Franklin, the butler but his work went uncredited.
  • Likewise, Justin Shenkarow voiced the kid Timmy Frye, but he wasn't credited.
  • Tim Curry's uncredited cameo as the laughing Robot Clown is a reference to the laugh he would have used had he remained cast as the Joker. According to Paul Dini, Curry's Joker voice strained his throat and was too demanding on his vocal cords, leading to the decision to recast Mark Hamill as the Joker. However, on an interview, composer Michael McCuistion revealed that the decision to recast Mark Hamill came from the producers of the show.
  • The people who voiced Senator Finch and Councilman Frye were not credited on the show.
